With 30 players remaining to start the day, early action was fast and furious with Fabio Espositio the first player eliminated when he cold four-bet shoved with the A?K? and was called by the three-bettor from the Rational Group Staff Member, Christopher Jonat, who held the Q?Q?. The board ran out 9?Q?9?3?6? and the importance of winning your flips was established early.
More eliminations quickly followed during the same level. Steve Russell, Jonathan Barr, Full Tilt Poker Tour Ambassador Ben Jenkins, Owen Fenwick, and Peter Warfvinge all headed for the exit shortly thereafter, then it was time for players to stick around.
The next level saw a number of double ups including Sam Razavi, who took a big pot off Jonat in a cooler situation with set over set. After that, some more exits occurred in Tomasz Chmiel, Mark Handley, and Lewis Cheetham.
By the end of the second level of the day, Duncan McLellan was still in the lead after starting the day on top, wielding his stack to good effect. With the ability to eliminate any of his opponents, he used that knowledge to put the pressure on the others time and time again. He was still closely being trailed by PokerStars SportStar Fatima Moreira de Melo, though.
The next level would see another flurry of eliminations, with Razavi riding his luck before he too was felted when he three-bet shoved with the K?J? and ran in to the A?A? of Richard Milne. With Mate Mecs also knocked out, the tournament was down to 15 players and there was a redraw.
Team PokerStars Pro Barry Greenstein picked up a lot of small pots by attacking Rational Group Staff Member Chris Straghalis and three-betting Alexander Schilts opens. Straghalis eventually shoved, but Greenstein had the best of it to double up and put the hurt on Straghalis. Greenstein was eventually eliminated in 11th place when he squeezed with the A?J?, but Harry Lodge had expertly set the trap by flatting the opener and called the all-in move with the J?J?. A final board of 8?5?K?Q?3? meant Greensteins run was at an end.
Other players eliminated in that level included Matthijs Rebel (15th), James Browning (14th), Paul Coughlan (13th), and Colin Marks (12th).
Then, there was a double up for de Melo, who had been in the danger zone for a while. Elsewhere, Dahe Liu lost a race with the K?10? against McLellans 8?8?, with the cards running out 5?5?A?A?Q? to bust Liu in 10th. With that, the unofficial final table of nine was set, and one more player neededto fall before play finished for the day. Before that happened, though, there was just time for McLellan to show an audacious bluff.
O'Connor opened to 40,000 from early position and McLellan three-bet to 85,000 on the button. O'Connor four-bet to 160,000 and McLellan called. The flop came 10?5?A? and McLellan called an 80,000-chip bet. The 6? fell on the turn, and when OConnor checked, McLellan moved all in. OConnor folded and McLellan showed the 3?2?.
It fell to Schilt to be the bubble boy when Jonat opened and called Schilts three-bet shove. Jonat had the 10?10?, crushing the 3?3? of Schilt. The board was 5?4?Q?K?8? and the final table was set.
